Environmental footprint of internet service provisioning in France.
This study is the result of a collective action initiated by ADEME and conducted by Resilio, to assess the environmental impact of the network throughout France. Four Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were involved: Orange, Bouygues Telecom, SFR and Iliad.
The results are presented for the whole of France and per subscriber, on fixed and mobile networks, and calculated for 16 environmental indicators, including climate change, consumption of natural resources and fine particles.
Digitalisation is deeply embedded in Dutch society and economy, with near-universal internet access and the Netherlands serving as a primary European connectivity hub due to the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX).
While this digital maturity drives significant social and economic benefits, it generates substantial environmental pressures.
TNO and Resilio have studied these environmental pressures, the main drivers of this environmental impact and potential interventions and their effects.
