Environmental impacts of IT equipment - A comparative analysis : Resilio Database and 'Product Carbon Footprint' sheets

This document presents a summary of the work carried out to compare the environmental impacts for about twenty laptop models, published by the manufacturers in their ‘Product Carbon Footprint’ (PCF) sheets and estimated by Resilio based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology.
The aim is to identify the reasons for differences in impacts between different sources providing environmental impact values for digital products and services (public and private databases, manufacturers’ declarations, etc.).
The analysis is based on PCF sheets from Dell and HP, as well as modelling of the impacts of the same models in Resilio Database.

Digitalisation is deeply embedded in Dutch society and economy, with near-universal internet access and the Netherlands serving as a primary European connectivity hub due to the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX). While this digital maturity drives significant social and economic benefits, it generates substantial environmental pressures. TNO and Resilio have studied these environmental pressures, the main drivers of this environmental impact and potential interventions and their effects.
